Former METALLICA bassist JASON NEWSTED has opened up about his battle with throat cancer, announcing that he has been given the all-clear following treatment and laser surgery performed in spring 2025.
The 63-year-old musician spoke candidly about his diagnosis and recovery: "I underwent a procedure for throat cancer... they took a bunch of shit outta here and then they went in with lasers this way... I got my 'free and clear' about three weeks ago. So I beat it."
Newsted described his current state of mind as the clearest he has ever experienced: "I'm more clear-headed than I've been in my entire adult life... there's blessings within everything." His wife has been a crucial source of support throughout the recovery process.
In celebration of his health victory, NEWSTED is launching his first North American headlining tour with The Chophouse Band this summer. The 18-date run begins July 1 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and concludes with two sold-out nights at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium on July 24 and 25. Ten of the dates will feature country-rock act Blackberry Smoke as a special guest.
JASON NEWSTED served as METALLICA's bassist from 1986 to 2001, appearing on landmark albums including "...And Justice For All" (1988) and the self-titled "Black Album" (1991). He later founded the band NEWSTED and has stayed active as a solo artist. The metal community has rallied around his recovery news, and this summer's tour promises to be a triumphant return to the stage.
