American thrash titans MEGADETH released their fifth studio album, "Countdown to Extinction," on July 14th, 1992, through Capitol Records. Produced by Max Norman alongside Dave Mustaine, the record captured the band's so-called classic lineup of Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, and Nick Menza at their commercial peak. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling over 128,000 copies in its first week, and went on to sell more than two million copies in the United States, making it MEGADETH's best-selling album to date. Songs like "Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets," and "Foreclosure of a Dream" married the band's razor-sharp thrash riffing with a newly accessible, groove-driven sensibility, while lyrics tackled gun violence, media manipulation, and environmental collapse. The album cemented MEGADETH as one of thrash metal's defining forces of the era.
