Australian writer Aaron Sammut sat down with us to talk about Maurice & The Metal, his indie comic set in the Bay Area thrash scene — and about issue five, now live on Kickstarter with backer copies shipping in November 2026.
The book follows a slacker drummer kid whose Walkman, possessed by his own father, hands him superpowers, and sets him against V and THE VAMPLIFIERS — a goth act out to flatten every genre in the Bay Area into one sound. The series has run black, white and red since issue one, a palette Sammut traces straight back to "Master of Puppets."
In the interview he covers the three illustrators the book has passed through, where he draws the line on AI in art and music, and why 200 backers matter to him more than the money.
