Chicago instrumental power trio COYOTE MAN are streaming their new full-length, "Prosthetic Memories", a day ahead of its official release on Friday, August 14. The premiere is running at Everything Is Noise.
Augie Portugal (guitar, keys), Rene Rodriguez (bass) and Ian Wheeler (drums, percussion) have been making noise together since the early 2000s, though COYOTE MAN itself dates to 2015. The riffs they trade in manage to be haunting and soothing at the same time — a reminder that music can still be an art form that resists the clichés of the digital age.
Everything Is Noise landed on the same quality in its write-up. "The first thing that springs to mind when going through all of it, is how fun the band sounds," the site wrote. "That isn't to say it couldn't be taken seriously or that there would be anything silly on it, but it sounds exactly the kind of abstract escapade inherent to the good kind of prog… the emphasis is still on metal and the drive it brings to the table, as is apparent on tracks like 'Zealotry' and 'War Hatchet,' while the likes of 'Holographic Heirloom' and 'Faith In A Burning Room' (the latter of which features something extra special, mind you) underline the aforementioned tendencies. I wouldn't go as far as to call it whimsical since COYOTE MAN sounds and seems intentionally way more hard-hitting and visceral than that, but there's certainly a lot of dumb smiles and good vibes to be found in there."
The album is the band's most ambitious work to date, moving through hope, conflict, introspection and triumph like the score to a film nobody has made — passages of beauty and wonder giving way to thunderous collisions with darker forces.
The title points at something specific. Prosthetic memories are memories that were never truly lived yet feel deeply personal: borrowed fragments of emotion, history, imagination and experience grafted onto the self. They live in the space between remembrance and invention, and they describe how all of us absorb stories, feelings and perspectives from the world around us. Across seven tracks the band turns that idea into sound — familiar and otherworldly at once, intensely personal and entirely relatable.
"Prosthetic Memories" was recorded in the summer of 2025 at Iron Hand Audio in Chicago and mixed and mastered by Dan Klein. Chris Pacific contributes guest vocals on closer "Faith In A Burning Room". The record arrives on CD, LP and digital.
