Jorn Lande is credited as co-writer on all eight tracks of "From The Dark", Tony Iommi's forthcoming solo album, and in a new interview with Ten Tons Of Tone he describes a process with no blueprint attached to it.
"I didn't have any strategies going in, or a different approach, really," Lande said. "[I] just went in as myself and with a very strong desire to give it my very best effort. My only focus was to naturally create the best possible vocal melodies to go with Tony's guitar riffs and arrangements, and the fact that I could take the time necessary was essential to the end result. There was never a plan to fit a certain 'style' or direction. It came about naturally between two musicians with mutual respect for each other."
The tone, he suggests, was never something either man had to reach for. "Of course, when working with Tony, his music naturally pulls you creatively into a darker and deeper mode for melodies and lyrics. Sometimes Tony would change his riffs to fit my melodies; other times I altered my melodies to fit his changes to riffs and musical structures."
The album's rhythm section is an unlikely pairing: drummer Karl Brazil, whose credits run through pop territory with Robbie Williams and James Blunt, and U.K. bassist Becky Baldwin, best known lately as a recent addition to MERCYFUL FATE.
"From The Dark" arrives in a stack of formats. The double LP is cut at 45rpm across four colour variants split between retailers, housed in a gatefold of premium black card with a die-cut of Iommi's signature cross that reveals a full illustration as the inner sleeve is drawn out. There is also an Amazon-exclusive CD using the same die-cut sleeve and a 32-page deluxe media book edition carrying two bonus tracks, "Scent Of Dark" and an extended version of "Deified".
The eight-song run reads: "Over The Violent Sun", "Black Times", "World Alone", "Beyond The Dead", "Stormwatcher", "Death Wake", "Return Of The Arbalist" and "Legacy".
The two have shared a stage before. Lande sang alongside Iommi, Geezer Butler, Vinny Appice and Glenn Hughes at the 2010 High Voltage festival in London, at a tribute to the recently departed Ronnie James Dio — the same year Lande released his own Dio tribute album. Asked years later whether the SABBATH camp resented the timing, he recalled a phone call from Iommi with a simple message: don't worry about it.
