The band formed in Colima, Mexico in 2012, after years of parallel projects among its members, and fixed early on a narrow set of coordinates: the classic Swedish death metal scene, and the raw sound of the '90s underground. DISMEMBER, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, UNLEASHED, PESTILENCE and CREMATORY are the names they name. The two albums that followed — "World Of Horror" in 2015 and "Necrokult" in 2017 — built on that foundation while pulling toward darker and more decadent atmospheres, with chaos, horror and aggression consistently favoured over technical display.
Then the releases mostly stopped. Their last new songs appeared on a six-way split in 2020, and nothing followed, though the band stayed active in the underground throughout. "Grimshrine" arrives nine years after "Necrokult", recorded by a new power-trio lineup.
Personal Records make the claim you would expect them to make — that you could mistake "Grimshrine" for a lost relic of 1992 — and for a band working this deliberately inside early Swedeath, that is plainly the target rather than a coincidence. Nothing about the record is pitched as an update to the form.
The tracklist carries one title worth pausing on. "Kuru: The Laughing Death March" takes its name from a real disease: kuru, a fatal prion illness that spread among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea through funerary cannibalism, and which was known as "the laughing death" for the pathological bursts of laughter it produced in its victims. It is a fittingly grim piece of source material for a band that named the album after a shrine.
