Angela Gossow, the voice that fronted ARCH ENEMY through their biggest years, was born on November 5, 1974, in Cologne, West Germany. After cutting her teeth in the German bands ASMODINA and MISTRESS, she got her break in the most metal way possible: while interviewing guitarist Michael Amott for a German webzine, she slipped him a rough video of one of her club shows. When ARCH ENEMY parted ways with Johan Liiva in 2000, they called her in to audition, and Amott later said she "wiped the floor" with every other contender. Her ferocious growls debuted on 2001's "Wages of Sin" and powered "Anthems of Rebellion", "Doomsday Machine" and "Khaos Legions", turning the Swedish melodic death metal band into a global headliner and inspiring a generation of women to take up extreme vocals. She stepped down in 2014, handing the microphone to Alissa White-Gluz, and continued working with the band behind the scenes as its manager.
