On June 29, 1999, Des Moines, Iowa nu-metal band SLIPKNOT released their self-titled major-label debut through Roadrunner Records. Produced by Ross Robinson at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, the album exploded onto the global heavy music scene with an intensity and visual presence unlike anything before it: nine members performing in numbered jumpsuits and masks, channeling rage, alienation, and Midwestern frustration into a relentless sonic assault that combined death metal, hip-hop groove, thrash intensity, and percussive experimentation. Tracks including "Wait and Bleed," "Spit It Out," "Eyeless," and "(sic)" defined a generation of heavy music listeners. The album was certified six times platinum in the United States and debuted at number fifty-one on the Billboard 200. SLIPKNOT's debut transformed the landscape of late-1990s heavy music and made the band one of the best-selling and most significant heavy metal acts in history.
