DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT
DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT (German: "The Path of a Freedom") is an atmospheric black metal band from Würzburg, Germany, founded in 2009 by guitarist and composer Nikita Kamprad. Their sound weaves raw aggression with introspective melody, post-rock expansiveness, and emotionally charged arrangements that set them apart from the wider black metal underground.
The band's early self-released recordings quickly earned underground recognition, leading to a proper debut reissue in 2010 with drummer Christian Bass joining the fold. Their 2012 album Unstille deepened the emotional architecture and introduced drummer Tobias Schuler. Following the departure of original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky, Kamprad assumed vocal duties — a role that defined the band's subsequent artistic identity.
Signing to Season of Mist brought 2015's Stellar, a breakthrough record that expanded their palette with post-rock and progressive elements, earning comparisons to Wolves in the Throne Room and Deafheaven. The 2017 conceptual album Finisterre explored isolation and dissolution across sprawling, meditative arrangements. After a live album in 2019, Noktvrn (2021) marked a bold evolution, incorporating clean vocals and classical influences from composers such as Chopin and Arvo Pärt.
Their 2025 album Innern — featuring new bassist Alan Noruspur — is their most introspective and compositionally ambitious work to date: six tracks traversing suffering, transformation, and the inner landscape of the self.
