TARJA TURUNEN has opened up about the thinking behind Frisson Noir, her upcoming solo album due June 12 via earMUSIC — and by all accounts, it represents the most powerful studio statement of her career since leaving NIGHTWISH.
The Finnish soprano explains the shift plainly: her live performances have long delivered a weight and intensity that her previous studio albums never quite matched. "I reach that heaviness in my live shows," Turunen has said, "but I haven't been able to reach it for my album productions." To finally bridge that gap, she brought in Grammy-winning mixing engineer Neal Avron — the man who shaped landmark records by LINKIN PARK, SKILLET, and DISTURBED — applying that same hard-hitting sonic approach to her grand orchestral palette.
The result is a 10-track album that moves between intimate piano-led passages and crushing, guitar-driven moments, wrapped in sweeping orchestral arrangements. Themes of fear, identity, resilience, and transformation run throughout, giving the record an emotional directness that feels genuinely new.
The guest roster speaks to the scope of the project: DANI FILTH of CRADLE OF FILTH, the cellos of APOCALYPTICA, former NIGHTWISH bassist and vocalist MARKO HIETALA, and — in a striking crossover — RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer CHAD SMITH.
Frisson Noir will be available in CD digipak, vinyl, and a limited collector's box set with signed prints and bonus materials.
To support the release, Turunen launches her international "Frisson" live tour on September 30, 2026, in Berlin, bringing the heaviest chapter of her solo career to audiences worldwide.
