Blaze Bayley had a heart attack in March 2023 and came out of it with a quadruple bypass. More than three years later, talking to Remzi "Jam Man" Yates of Rocking With Jam Man, he is clear that the experience was not the one people assume he had.
"I didn't have a near-death experience, so I never felt in fear of losing my life," he says. There was no white light and no reckoning. What there was, immediately, was a piece of unfinished business: "I really wanted to make another album. I didn't wanna leave it there." He got to the hospital fast — treatment inside fifteen minutes of calling for help, after chest pain at home — which is a large part of why there was an afterwards to plan at all.
The change he describes is not dramatic, which is rather the point. He is, in his phrase, less stressed over details, and his summary of the shift is a sentence anyone could have told him and nobody could have made him believe: "Don't sweat the small stuff." The practical version is about people — caring more about who he works with and less about the parts of the job that used to generate friction.
His definition of success has moved with it. "Success now for me is being independent and doing things on my own terms," he says — and on his terms means small rooms and close contact with an audience, not a campaign to get back into big venues. For a singer who spent five years fronting IRON MAIDEN, that is a fairly unsentimental position to arrive at.
Recovery has not been linear. A knee injury set him back by roughly five months, though he reports his energy and strength are now fully returned. The part he is losing is the one nobody puts in the recovery story: "The worst part about it for me is the diet — trying to keep the weight off." He has views on why that is difficult, and they are his own: he argues the food industry and pharmaceutical companies are, as he puts it, complicit in making people fat.
Bayley fronted IRON MAIDEN from 1994 to 1999, has recorded with WOLFSBANE across four decades, and released his most recent solo album, "Circle Of Stone", in February 2024. He confirmed earlier this month that he is gathering ideas for the next one.
