CALVARIUM

CALVARIUM

Planted in the fertile Norwegian soil, the black metal seed yields a rich harvest. Foreigners took these seeds and grew them in their own lands. It also reached Finland. The result: Finnish black metal. CALVARIUM, a trio from Finland, decided not to reinvent the wheel — they just hopped on and rode forward, releasing a solid, professional black metal album "The Skull Of Golgotha".

Scorpio: Please introduce CALVARIUM.

Molestor Kadotus: Yes, to keep it short: Calvarium was formed by Lord Sargofagian and Veilroth soon after the death of the previous millennium. They sought a channel to perform dark and sinister Black Metal with a professional touch. The first rehearsal tape was recorded with this line-up, and soon after that I joined the hordes of Calvarium. With the new line-up and new songs, we recorded a second rehearsal tape in torture. We then started planning the first demo tape, which was to be made with a pro touch — not with some low-quality tape recorder in a garage. So we reserved time at a studio in Jyväskylä. During the recordings, a local record label (Dynamic Arts) offered us a deal to release a full-length instead, and we accepted it, of course. But more songs were required along with new studio time, and after a "few" setbacks we headed to Studio Perkele in Kuopio to finish the album. And here we are now. Next, we're planning to release some vinyl attacks, which you'll hear about later...

Scorpio: Why did you decide to name the band "Calvarium" and what does it mean?

Molestor Kadotus: The name was chosen by Lord Sargofagian and Veilroth, so I don't really know why they picked it. Anyway, the name Calvarium means "skull without the jawbone" and also Golgotha in a distant way. These two combine perfectly with the concept of the band — skull of Christ, crushed to dust.

Scorpio: Were there other options?

Molestor Kadotus: Not that I know of.

Scorpio: When you were going to enter the studio to record your album, the equipment was destroyed in a fire. As I've heard, it happened six hours before your session. Maybe it was six hours, six minutes, and six seconds? :)

Molestor Kadotus: Approximately six hours before, yes. Why it happened so close to our session is unknown to me. Most probably just bad luck.

Scorpio: Do you think it was a sign?

Molestor Kadotus: No. One could think of possibilities and curses, of course, but seriously, no.

Scorpio: Do you believe in destiny?

Molestor Kadotus: No, I don't. And I presume none of us believes in such superstitious crap.

'The Skull Of Golgotha'Scorpio: Your debut is entitled "The Skull Of Golgotha." What is your attitude toward Jesus Christ?

Molestor Kadotus: Maybe it could be figured out already from the title? Or from the lyrics? Jesus perhaps lived once. Maybe he was an alien from outer space and "god" was the mothership, but more likely he was just a normal, charismatic man of his time. The concept of Jesus is pathetic and weak — one which I despise as a strong satanist. The values and virtues of Jesus are those of the weak and perished, not for those who will survive and conquer with strength and honor. To quote Vincent Crowley of Acheron: "Fuck the Ways of Christ."

Scorpio: Why are your lyrics in both English and Finnish? Maybe it would be better to choose just one language?

Molestor Kadotus: No, I think not. The lyrics are in both languages because I like creating lyrics in both. Today's trend in Finland is to create Finnish-sung BM or at least include one Finnish-sung track. I do have a "weak spot" for Finnish-sung Black Metal when it's made with quality and not some teenage shit. I prefer the Finnish language as it's easier to handle with its variable words and to create a poetic feel. But since Satanic Propaganda needs a wider channel to spread through, English is good to include for the foreigners.

Scorpio: Your five favorite Finnish words... (word — translation in English)

Molestor Kadotus: ??? My five favorite words? Hmm. Maybe some old words that have been lost from common speech nowadays. They're pretty hard to translate. Like "Näkki" (an evil water spirit from old stories), "peikko" (troll), "Vetehinen" (another water spirit), and such.

Scorpio: And what was your first ever spoken word (I mean, when you were a little, little boy)?

Molestor Kadotus: What the fuck? Why? I guess my first words were "Hail Satan" or something like that... not.

Scorpio: Your pseudonyms — how and where did you get them?

Molestor Kadotus: I don't know about the others, but I myself have used the name Kadotus for a long time. After a certain Finnish poser band stole the name, I chose to add "Molestor" to it to avoid any connection to those assholes. Actually, the name Molestor is also close to my nature if you get to know me, hah. That's what they say, at least...

Scorpio: Other bands and projects of CALVARIUM's members...

Molestor Kadotus: I have several projects, of which the most important is my solo project ANAL BLASPHEMY, and as the name suggests, it's really dirty and primitive Black Metal like Blasphemy, old Beherit, and such. In addition, I have several other bands that I don't care to list here. I also run a distribution and I'm starting a new label, "Hammer of Hate," to release dedicated, extreme METAL! Lord Sargofagian has his own band BAPTISM, which is most certainly worth checking out! He also participates in Valonsurma, Uncreation's Dawn, and some others. Veilroth plays rhythm guitar in BEHEXEN, also a band worth checking out!

Scorpio: Is CALVARIUM the main band for all of you?

Molestor Kadotus: No, it's the main band for Veilroth since he writes all the music and such. Calvarium is also important to me as I create the ideological side and lyrics, but I don't know which is my "main" band at the moment.

Scorpio: How do you like the collaboration with Dynamic Arts Records?

Molestor Kadotus: Dynamic Arts did a good job with the CD and advertising.

Scorpio: You don't use makeup. Do you think corpsepaint is a stupid gimmick, or do you just not have money for paint? :)

Molestor Kadotus: We are not poor like russians, hah. I have paint; we just decided not to use it this time. I personally hold warpaint in great value when it comes to Black Metal. But it's a good change not to use it once in a while. It's not certain that we'd never use corpsepaint, though.

Scorpio: Who was the man whose skull is in your photo? Your victim? :)

Molestor Kadotus: No, I don't know who he was. The skull belongs to a close friend of ours who... "found" it.

Scorpio: Imagine that you have the chance to buy a tank, a military airplane, or a ship. What would you choose and why?

Molestor Kadotus: I think Batman would win the fight against Superman because he has his utility belt and is more cunning.

Scorpio: The cleverest person in the whole world?

Molestor Kadotus: ??? How the hell would I know?!

Scorpio: And the most stupid?

Molestor Kadotus: I have some ideas for this one...

CALVARIUM

.Scorpio: Top 5 Suomi Metal:

Molestor Kadotus: NIGHTFISH, CHILDREN OF BOREDOM, STRATOGAYRIUS, HIM-faggots and stuff like that always turns me on. But when talking about good METAL bands, excluding our own projects, I'd choose something like SATANIC WARMASTER, AZAGHAL (+ the other Hyvinkää projects), CLANDESTINE BLAZE, MUSTA SURMA, WARLOGHE, HORNA, URN, INCRIMINATED, etc. The list is almost endless.

Scorpio: Top 5 World Metal:

Molestor Kadotus: Metal or Black Metal? Either way, it's hard to choose only five and even harder to put them into "top 5 form." Some of my favorites are GRAND BELIAL'S KEY, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, ARCKANUM, KING DIAMOND + MERCYFUL FATE, KREATOR, GWAR, BLACK FUNERAL, BLACK WITCHERY, BURZUM, DESTROYER 666, AC/DC, DEICIDE, SS TOTENKOPF, NECROPHAGIA, EVOL, FORGOTTEN WOODS, BEWITCHED, DYING FETUS, DEAD INFECTION, CANNIBAL CORPSE, MZ.412... This list is even more endless. The world is full of good metal and a thousand times more shit.

Scorpio: "Hellwords of Apocalypse" for our readers and your fans...

Molestor Kadotus: Thanks and hails to our fans! Satanic greetings also to your readers.
