COAL CHAMBER vocalist Dez Fafara has spoken emotionally about the recovery of the band's drummer Mikey "Bug" Cox from a year-long cancer battle, and the band's triumphant return to the stage at Sick New World festival in Las Vegas on April 25, 2026.

In an interview with KillerTube, Fafara revealed that Cox was diagnosed with stage three cancer on April 1, 2025, and underwent "a year-long battle and absolutely brutal rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and eventually surgery" before being declared cancer-free.

Fafara described being overcome with emotion backstage before the show: "I just hugged him, and I was just almost in tears. I'm just really blessed that he's with us." He reflected on how Cox's illness deepened their bond as bandmates and friends, transcending the age gap that existed when Cox first joined COAL CHAMBER at the age of 17.

The Sick New World performance marked the band's first show since Cox's treatment, representing a milestone for a group that has already navigated significant health challenges. In January 2025, COAL CHAMBER were forced to cancel their "Fiend For The Fans" U.S. tour due to Fafara's own separate health emergency.

COAL CHAMBER originally reformed in 2011 after an eight-year hiatus, reuniting the nu-metal pioneers for a new generation of fans. Despite the hardships of recent years, Fafara expressed nothing but positivity about the band's future, also hinting at secret collaborative work between himself and Cox undertaken during the drummer's treatment.
