Our full interview with Miguel Pereira, bassist of the international prog metal band TEMIC, is now live on themetallist.com in English and Ukrainian, with the video version on our YouTube channel. We spoke right after the release of Ceiba, the band's second album, out now on Season of Mist and the first TEMIC record Miguel played on as a full member.
Season of Mist calls TEMIC a supergroup, and Miguel is happy to take half of that label. "Supergroup band, yes, I can agree with that," he told us. "Supergroup project, no, because we are here to stay." For all five members — spread between Norway, Tulsa and Mexico City — TEMIC is the main thing, not a side gig.
He also explains how Ceiba became a concept album about loss almost by accident, when the band noticed a common thread running through songs written separately, and why it still ends on a hopeful note. At 66 minutes it runs past the band's own 60-minute target, and Miguel says that's deliberate: "It's made to be enjoyed as one continuous piece."
Also in the interview
- why he plays a six-string bass, and the laser-like bass on "Casting Stone"
- why there's no bass at all on "Broken"
- his famous bass face, and being a Portuguese musician in Norway
- the prog police at the back of every room
- three years in a row on Cruise to the Edge, and the visa lottery that cost TEMIC their ProgPower USA show
- WITHEM, BIG CITY and TERRA ODIUM, Davie504, and the bassist jokes he hears from his own bandmates
- his top five bassists, from Flea to Dave LaRue
We've followed the Ceiba campaign from the album announcement and the singles "Broken" and "Ashes" to the full album stream, and we gave the album 9/10 in our review.
