Progressive metal visionary Devin Townsend has announced that his ambitious rock opera "The Moth" arrives on May 29 via InsideOut Music. In a candid new interview, he also reflected on how his voice has survived nearly four decades of intense performing — largely without formal training.

"The Moth" is an expansive three-part work featuring orchestral arrangements and a live recording from March 2025. It represents one of Townsend's most theatrical and emotionally ambitious projects, continuing a long tradition of genre-defying releases that consistently defy expectations.

On the topic of vocal longevity, Townsend explained that his approach has always been rooted in conservation rather than showmanship. "I don't sing for the fun of it. I sing when I have to sing," he said. This philosophy was born in part out of early necessity — when working with guitarist Steve Vai early in his career, a vocal coach reportedly warned he might not last a single year.

Townsend connects his vocal health directly to psychological wellbeing, describing his primary "vocal exercise" as mental and emotional self-work rather than technical drills. He also spoke about navigating today's demanding music industry, noting that he has hired younger staff to handle social media and streaming obligations — freeing him to focus entirely on authentic creative output.

Following the release, Townsend embarks on a European solo tour in September–October 2026: 23 shows across 10 countries, with varying setlists at each stop.
