FATES WARNING's Ray Alder: 'I Don't Rule Out Future Live Shows' After Seven-Year Hiatus

FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder has offered a glimmer of hope to fans who have been waiting seven years for the legendary progressive metal band to return to the stage. In a recent interview, Alder stated clearly that he does not rule out future live shows — acknowledging the fan demand is real — but flagged logistics as the primary obstacle.

The band last performed live in 2019, before a combination of the global pandemic and subsequent silence left fans wondering whether FATES WARNING had played their final concert. Alder's new comments suggest the door is not entirely closed.

Logistical challenges for FATES WARNING are substantial. The band members — Alder, guitarist Jim Matheos, bassist Joey Vera, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek — are spread across different US cities and are all involved in various side projects and commitments. Coordinating tours, rehearsals, and production around those schedules is genuinely complex in a way it isn't for full-time touring acts.

Jim Matheos has been particularly prolific outside FATES WARNING, releasing multiple albums under the OSI banner and collaborating extensively with other artists. Joey Vera fronts ARMORED SAINT alongside his work with FATES WARNING and various production projects.

Despite the logistical hurdles, Alder's tone suggests that if the pieces fall into place, a return is possible. FATES WARNING's catalogue — spanning from Awaken the Guardian (1986) through masterpieces like Parallels and A Pleasant Shade of Gray — demands to be heard live. For the progressive metal community, even the faintest hint of a comeback is worth celebrating.
