CRO-MAGS have released "Wired For Chaos," their first new music in six years, and it arrives with all the aggression and purpose that made the New York hardcore legends essential in the first place. The track premiered through Rolling Stone alongside a music video directed by Rex Miller and will appear on an upcoming full-length album scheduled for 2027 release through BLKIIBLK, the heavy metal imprint of the Frontiers Label Group.
The song shares its title with a recent documentary chronicling the turbulent life of frontman Harley Flanagan — the man who has kept CRO-MAGS alive through decades of lineup disputes, legal battles, and personal upheaval. If anyone has earned the right to declare themselves "wired for chaos," it's Flanagan.
Musically, the track is exactly what you'd hope for: an aggressive metal intro built for a stadium walk-in or video game cutscene before detonating into the traditional hardcore-thrash hybrid that CRO-MAGS have always excelled at, then pulling back into a heavy beatdown section. Flanagan described the composition in these precise terms himself, and the execution matches the description.
The new album is being produced by Arthur Rizk, whose credentials in the heavy underground are impeccable — previous credits include KREATOR, MUNICIPAL WASTE, CODE ORANGE, and SOULFLY. SEPULTURA drummer Greyson Nekrutman appears on the project, lending his considerable power to the rhythm section.
CRO-MAGS' influence on heavy music stretches far beyond what their commercial profile might suggest. Flanagan noted that the band's impact reaches acts as diverse as METALLICA, GREEN DAY, and Dave Grohl — an extraordinary range that speaks to the universality of the band's foundational hardcore approach.
The lyrics of "Wired For Chaos" dig into something more philosophical than straightforward aggression. Flanagan described the song as being "about being programmed and wired for chaos from birth — not just by environment, but by parents, trauma, childhood experiences, and the resulting PTSD." It's the kind of lyrical honesty that elevates hardcore beyond mere catharsis.
The band's last album, "In The Beginning," was released in June 2020. Four years was already a long wait for new CRO-MAGS material; six only sharpens the anticipation. The 2027 full-length can't come soon enough.
