Death metal veterans AUTOPSY are gearing up to return to the studio before the end of 2026, with drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert confirming plans for a follow-up to 2023's Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts. The new album is expected to arrive in 2027.
In a recent interview, Reifert discussed the band's approach to crafting new material — a balance between authenticity and avoiding self-imitation. "We're not gonna all of a sudden start trying to sound like DREAM THEATER or something," he said with characteristic bluntness. The goal, as he described it, is to sound "fresh enough to where you're not imitating something you already did, but not too outside of the bubble."
This commitment to staying true to their roots has defined AUTOPSY since the band's formation in San Francisco in 1987. After disbanding in 1995, the group reunited in 2010 and has delivered a consistent stream of uncompromising death metal ever since. Their 2023 effort was recorded at Sharkbite Studios and Earhammer Studios, featuring signature cover art by longtime collaborator Wes Benscoter.
Reifert's no-frills attitude toward the band's sound underscores why AUTOPSY remain one of the genre's most respected acts — nearly four decades in, they still play by their own rules. Expect the new album to deliver the same raw, putrid death metal that made them legends.
